air fryer peach crisp

This delightful Air Fryer Peach Crisp is a close cousin to the beloved peach cobbler but stands out with its signature oat-based crisp topping. Unlike a cobbler, which typically features a biscuit-like crust, our crisp offers a wonderfully crunchy and buttery texture that perfectly complements the soft, warm peaches beneath. It’s an ideal balance of sweet, tart, and spiced flavors, making it a truly irresistible dessert.

Our recipe has been thoughtfully adapted from a fan-favorite Ninja Foodi Blueberry Crisp to be perfectly suited for a traditional air fryer. This adaptation ensures you get the same fantastic results with the ease and efficiency of air frying, allowing you to enjoy this classic dessert anytime, even on the hottest days.

Essential Ingredients for a Perfect Peach Crisp

Creating this irresistible peach crisp requires a handful of common ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your pantry. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the fresh, vibrant flavors that shine through. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need to gather:

air fryer peach crisp ingredients
  • Yellow Peaches: These are the star of the show! Yellow peaches offer a beautiful color and a classic sweet-tart flavor that’s perfect for crisp. You can use fresh, ripe peaches for the best results, but canned or frozen peaches (thawed and drained) can also work in a pinch. If opting for fresh, choose firm, fragrant peaches. White peaches can be used if you prefer a slightly sweeter and less acidic fruit.
  • Granulated Sugar: This provides the primary sweetness for the peach filling, balancing the fruit’s natural tartness.
  • Ground Cinnamon: A staple spice for peach desserts, cinnamon adds warmth and a comforting aroma that enhances the overall flavor profile.
  • Ground Nutmeg: Just a touch of nutmeg deepens the spice notes and adds a subtle, earthy richness that pairs wonderfully with peaches and cinnamon.
  • Gluten-Free or Regular Old Fashioned Oats: These are crucial for the crisp topping, providing that distinct chewy and crunchy texture. Ensure you use old-fashioned (rolled) oats, not instant, for the best results. For a gluten-free version, look for certified gluten-free oats to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Gluten-Free or Regular All-Purpose Flour: This acts as a binder in the crisp topping, helping to create a cohesive crumble. If making it gluten-free, a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour blend is essential.
  • Brown Sugar (Packed): Brown sugar contributes to the rich, caramel-like flavor and moist texture of the crisp topping. Packing it ensures accurate measurement.
  • Baking Powder: A small amount of baking powder in the topping helps to give it a slightly lighter, airier texture, preventing it from becoming too dense.
  • Unsalted Butter (Softened): Butter is key for flavor and for binding the topping ingredients into a delicious crumb. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the salt content of the dish. Make sure it’s softened for easy blending.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream for Serving: An absolute must for serving! The cold, creamy vanilla ice cream creates a delightful contrast with the warm peach crisp.
  • 4 – 12oz Ramekins: These individual baking dishes are essential for this recipe as written, allowing for perfect single servings within the air fryer.

As mentioned, this recipe is adaptable if you prefer white peaches, simply substitute them for yellow peaches. Always aim for fresh, ripe fruit when possible to achieve the most vibrant flavors in your crisp.

Do You Need Ramekins for Air Fryer Peach Crisp?

Yes, for this specific Air Fryer Peach Crisp recipe, 12oz ramekins or similar oven-safe souffle dishes are highly recommended and essentially needed to follow the instructions precisely. These individual baking dishes are key to the recipe’s success for a few important reasons:

Firstly, using ramekins allows you to create four perfectly portioned individual servings. This not only makes for an elegant presentation but also ensures even cooking in the air fryer. The size of the ramekins is designed to fit well within most air fryer baskets, enabling efficient cooking without overcrowding.

Secondly, the individual nature of ramekins helps prevent the crisp from becoming soggy. Each portion gets direct heat and airflow, promoting that coveted golden, crunchy topping. While you might be able to adapt the recipe to a larger oven-safe dish, the cooking times and the signature crispness achieved in an air fryer might vary significantly. For the best, most consistent results with this air fryer method, sticking to the recommended 12oz ramekins is your best bet.

Making This Recipe Gluten-Free: A Simple Guide

If you’re following a gluten-free diet or simply looking to offer an option for guests with dietary restrictions, converting this peach crisp to a gluten-free version is incredibly straightforward. The primary components that need attention are the flour and the oats in the crisp topping.

For the flour, you will need to use a high-quality gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. It’s crucial to select a blend that is specifically formulated as a 1:1 substitute for regular all-purpose flour. This means you can use the exact same measurements without needing to make complex adjustments to the recipe. Our top recommendations for reliable 1:1 gluten-free flour brands include:

  • Better Batter
  • King Arthur Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour
  • Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Baking Flour
  • Cup4Cup Gluten-Free Flour

These brands are known for their consistent performance and ability to mimic the texture and binding properties of traditional wheat flour, ensuring your crisp topping turns out perfectly crumbly and delicious.

In addition to the flour, it’s essential to use certified Gluten-Free Old Fashioned Oats. While oats are naturally gluten-free, they are often processed in facilities that also handle wheat, barley, and rye, leading to cross-contamination. Purchasing oats clearly labeled as “certified gluten-free” guarantees they meet strict standards and are safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. We personally prefer and recommend Bob’s Red Mill Certified Gluten-Free Old Fashioned Rolled Oats for their excellent quality and texture.

The remaining ingredients in this recipe – fresh peaches, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, unsalted butter, and vanilla ice cream – are typically naturally gluten-free. However, it’s always a good practice to double-check the labels of all ingredients, especially spices and processed items, to confirm they don’t contain any hidden gluten-containing additives, particularly if you are preparing this for someone with a severe allergy.

Expert Tips for Making the Best Air Fryer Peach Crisp

Mastering this Air Fryer Peach Crisp recipe is simple, but a few key tips will help ensure your dessert turns out perfectly golden, bubbly, and utterly delicious every single time.

air fryer peach crisp process

1. Individual Portions are Key: This recipe is specifically designed for individual ramekins, making it ideal for air frying. The ingredients are carefully divided into four 12-ounce ramekin dishes. This method ensures that each serving cooks evenly and gets that desirable crisp topping and tender fruit base. Don’t try to cram a large baking dish into your air fryer; stick to the individual portions for optimal results.

2. Air Frying Temperature and Time: Once your peach crisp dishes are assembled, they’ll be placed into the air fryer basket and cooked at 350°F (175°C). The initial recommended cooking time is 20 minutes if your air fryer is starting from cold. However, if your air fryer is already preheated, you can reduce the cooking time to about 15 minutes. Always keep an eye on the crisp during the last few minutes, as air fryer models can vary in heating efficiency.

3. Batch Cooking for Multiple Servings: Most standard air fryers, like our Ninja Air Fryer, can typically accommodate two 12-ounce ramekins at a time. This means if you’re making all four servings, you’ll need to cook them in two batches. This is perfectly normal and allows for proper air circulation, which is essential for achieving that beautifully crisp topping. If you only need two servings, simply halve the recipe and prepare only two ramekins to avoid unnecessary cooking or storage.

4. Achieving the Perfect Topping: The goal is a golden-brown, crunchy topping. If you notice the topping browning too quickly before the peaches are tender, you can loosely cover the ramekins with a small piece of aluminum foil for the remaining cook time. This helps prevent over-browning while allowing the fruit to soften.

5. Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: When cooking in batches, ensure there’s enough space around each ramekin for hot air to circulate. Overcrowding will lead to uneven cooking and a less crispy topping.

6. Serve Warm with Vanilla Ice Cream: While the crisp is delicious on its own, it truly shines when served warm with a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream. The contrast of temperatures and textures is heavenly.

The full, detailed step-by-step instructions for preparing your Air Fryer Peach Crisp are provided in the comprehensive recipe card below. Follow these tips along with the recipe card, and you’ll be enjoying a perfectly baked, delightful dessert in no time!

Storing and Reheating Leftover Peach Crisp

While freshly made peach crisp is undoubtedly the best, you might find yourself with leftovers, especially if you’ve made a full batch of four servings. Properly storing and reheating your crisps ensures they remain delicious for another delightful treat.

If you have any leftover individual peach crisps, allow them to cool completely to room temperature first. Once cooled, cover each ramekin tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. This prevents air from drying out the crisp and keeps the peaches moist. Store the covered crisps in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Beyond this, the topping may start to lose its crispness, and the fruit might become too soft.

When you’re ready to enjoy your leftovers, the best way to reheat them is back in the air fryer to revive that wonderful crispy topping. Preheat your air fryer to 340°F (170°C). Place the leftover crisp (still in its ramekin, uncovered, or loosely covered if you prefer) into the basket and air fry for 2-3 minutes, or until the peaches are warm and bubbly and the topping has re-crisped slightly. Be careful not to overheat, as this can dry out the fruit.

Alternatively, you can reheat in a microwave for a quicker option, but be aware that the topping may not regain its crispness. For microwave reheating, warm on medium power for 30-60 seconds, or until heated through. For oven reheating, preheat to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 5-10 minutes, or until warm.

This delicious Air Fryer Peach Crisp is sure to be a hit during the summer season and beyond. It’s a versatile dessert that brings warmth and flavor without heating up your entire home. Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Peach Crisp

Here are some common questions you might have when making this delicious air fryer peach crisp:

  • Can I use frozen peaches? Yes, absolutely! If using frozen peaches, make sure to thaw them completely and drain any excess liquid before tossing them with the sugar and spices. This prevents the crisp from becoming watery. You might also want to pat them dry gently.
  • Can I use canned peaches? Canned peaches can also be used for convenience. Be sure to choose peaches packed in juice or light syrup, not heavy syrup, and drain them very well. You may need to reduce the amount of granulated sugar in the peach filling slightly, as canned peaches are often sweeter.
  • How can I prevent a soggy crisp topping? A few factors contribute to a perfectly crisp topping. Ensure your butter is softened, not melted, when mixing the topping ingredients. This helps create distinct crumbs. Also, don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket, allowing sufficient airflow. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, you can tent it loosely with aluminum foil for the remaining cooking time.
  • Can I prepare this ahead of time? You can prepare the peach filling and the crisp topping separately a day in advance. Store the peach mixture covered in the refrigerator. Keep the crisp topping in a separate airtight container in the fridge or freezer. Assemble just before air frying for the best results. You can also assemble the crisps in the ramekins and refrigerate for a few hours, then air fry as directed, potentially adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time if starting from very cold.
  • What if my air fryer is a different size? The cooking time and ability to fit ramekins will vary based on your air fryer’s size and model. If your air fryer is smaller, you might only fit one ramekin at a time, extending the total cooking duration for all four servings. If your air fryer is larger, you might fit more than two. Always monitor the crisp closely, especially during your first batch, and adjust cooking time as needed until the topping is golden and the peaches are tender and bubbling.

Delicious Variations to Elevate Your Peach Crisp

While this classic Air Fryer Peach Crisp recipe is perfect as is, it’s also wonderfully adaptable! Don’t be afraid to experiment with these delicious variations to make it your own:

  • Add Nuts to the Topping: For an extra layer of crunch and nutty flavor, fold in 1/4 to 1/2 cup of chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds into your crisp topping mixture. The nuts toast beautifully in the air fryer, adding a delightful texture.
  • Spice It Up: Beyond cinnamon and nutmeg, consider adding a pinch of ground ginger, allspice, or cardamom to the peach filling for a more complex spice profile. A touch of vanilla extract in the peach mixture can also deepen the flavor.
  • Berry Bliss: Peaches pair wonderfully with berries! Mix 1/2 cup of fresh or frozen (thawed and drained) blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries with your peaches before dividing them into ramekins. This adds a burst of tartness and vibrant color.
  • Caramel Drizzle: After baking, a drizzle of warm caramel sauce over the top of your peach crisp (especially when served with vanilla ice cream!) is an indulgent touch that will make this dessert extra special.
  • Citrus Zest: A little lemon or orange zest in the peach filling can brighten the flavors and add a refreshing note, cutting through some of the sweetness.
  • Oatmeal Crumble Topping Variations: For an even chewier topping, you can slightly increase the amount of oats and reduce the flour. For a richer topping, consider adding a tablespoon of finely chopped cream cheese to the butter mixture.

Feel free to mix and match these variations to discover your favorite combination. The beauty of peach crisp is its forgiving nature and its ability to incorporate different flavors beautifully.
