Essential Ingredients for Your Easy Air Fryer Catfish
One of the many reasons this recipe is a standout is its incredible simplicity. You truly only need three core ingredients to create these mouth-watering catfish nuggets. Forget about complicated egg washes or multiple flour dredge steps – we’re keeping it streamlined for maximum convenience and flavor.

- Catfish Fillets: You can use whole catfish fillets and cut them down, or purchase pre-cut catfish nuggets for even quicker prep. Catfish offers a mild, slightly sweet flavor and a firm texture that holds up beautifully in the air fryer.
- Fish Fry Mix: This is your secret weapon for incredible flavor and crispiness. A good quality fish fry mix already contains a blend of seasoned flour or cornmeal, ensuring a consistent and delicious coating. For a gluten-free version, simply choose a certified gluten-free fish fry mix.
- Olive Oil Cooking Spray or Grapeseed Oil Cooking Spray: A cooking spray is crucial for achieving that signature air-fried crisp without excess oil. Grapeseed oil is particularly excellent here due to its high smoke point, which means it can withstand the air fryer’s high temperatures without burning, leading to a cleaner taste and better browning. Olive oil spray also works well.
That’s right, just three simple ingredients! There’s no need for separate egg washes or multiple flour coatings with this method. However, if you’re looking for a more traditional fish breading experience that’s still air-fried and gluten-free, you might enjoy exploring this Air Fried Fish recipe, which offers a different technique.
Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Air Fryer Catfish Nuggets
Making crispy air fryer catfish nuggets is surprisingly simple, even for novice cooks. While we’re focusing on “nuggets” for easy eating and faster cooking, remember that this method can also be applied to larger, whole catfish fillets if you prefer. Just adjust cooking times accordingly.
Preparing Your Catfish
First things first, let’s get your catfish ready. If you’re starting with whole catfish fillets, you’ll want to transform them into bite-sized nuggets. Use a sharp knife to cut the fillets into smaller, uniform pieces. Aim for a size similar to that of chicken nuggets, which typically range from 1 to 1.5 inches. Uniform pieces ensure even cooking.

Once your catfish is cut, pat each piece thoroughly with paper towels. This step is crucial for achieving maximum crispiness. Removing excess moisture from the fish’s surface helps the breading adhere better and promotes a crispier crust. Set the patted-dry catfish pieces aside.
Coating the Catfish
Next, prepare your breading station. Pour your chosen fish fry mix into a shallow bowl. Take each catfish piece and dip it into the fish fry, ensuring it’s coated evenly on all sides. Don’t press too hard; a light, even coating is what you’re aiming for. Shake off any excess mix to prevent a gummy texture.
Air Frying for Perfection
Before placing the coated catfish into your air fryer, it’s essential to prepare the basket. Lightly coat the air fryer basket with a cooking oil spray, such as olive oil or grapeseed oil. This prevents sticking and contributes to that desirable crispy exterior. Grapeseed oil is often preferred due to its higher smoke point, which tolerates the air fryer’s heat better.
Arrange the breaded catfish pieces in a single layer in the prepared air fryer basket. It’s vital not to overcrowd the basket. Leave enough space between each nugget to allow hot air to circulate freely around them. This airflow is what makes air frying so effective at creating crispy textures. Once arranged, give the top of each fillet a generous, even coat of cooking oil spray. This light layer of oil is key to achieving a truly golden and crispy finish, mimicking the results of deep frying but with significantly less fat.

Now, it’s time to cook! Air fry the catfish nuggets at 390°F (199°C) for an initial 10 minutes. After this time, carefully open the air fryer. Using tongs or a spatula, gently flip each catfish nugget to ensure even browning and crisping on both sides. Apply another light spray of cooking oil to the newly exposed side. Continue cooking for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the catfish is beautifully golden brown and crispy on the outside.
Keep in mind that air fryer models can vary in their heating efficiency, so it’s always a good idea to monitor your catfish closely during the cooking process. Towards the end of the cook time, you might want to check for doneness to prevent overcooking.
Ensuring Your Fish is Perfectly Cooked
Knowing when fish is perfectly cooked is key to a delicious meal. For catfish, or any fish for that matter, you want it to be flaky and tender, not dry or rubbery. The easiest and most accurate way to check for doneness is by using a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of a nugget; the internal temperature should reach at least 145°F (63°C) to be considered safe to eat.
Visually, cooked catfish will also turn opaque throughout. If it still looks translucent in the center, it needs more time. When gently flaked with a fork, it should separate easily without resistance.
Storing and Reheating Air-Fried Catfish Nuggets

If you happen to have any leftover air-fried catfish nuggets (though they’re so tasty, that’s a big “if”!), proper storage is essential to maintain their quality. Place the cooled nuggets in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for 3-4 days.
When it comes to reheating, the air fryer is your best friend for bringing back that original crispiness. Place the nuggets in the air fryer basket (no need to pre-spray if they still have some oil residue, but a light spray can help) and heat them on medium-high heat (around 350-375°F or 175-190°C) for 4-5 minutes, or until thoroughly heated through and crispy again. You can also reheat them in a microwave-safe dish for 2-3 minutes, but be aware they won’t be as crispy as when reheated in the air fryer.
Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with Your Air Fryer Catfish Nuggets
These crispy air fryer catfish nuggets are incredibly versatile and pair wonderfully with a variety of side dishes. For a complete and satisfying meal, consider these classic and air-fryer friendly options:

- Air Fryer Hush Puppies: A quintessential companion to any fish fry. These golden, savory cornmeal bites are simple to make in the air fryer and offer a delightful contrast to the fish.
- Air Fryer Onion Rings: For an extra crunch and savory flavor, homemade air fryer onion rings are a fantastic choice. They get perfectly crisp without the deep-frying mess.
- Air Fryer French Fries: A timeless side that everyone loves. Making them fresh in the air fryer ensures they are hot, crispy, and less greasy than their deep-fried counterparts.
- Creamy Coleslaw: The cool, tangy crunch of coleslaw provides a refreshing balance to the rich flavor of the fried fish.
- Roasted Vegetables: For a lighter, healthier option, serve with a medley of roasted vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, or bell peppers.
- Lemon Wedges: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice over your hot catfish nuggets brightens the flavor and adds a burst of citrusy goodness.
Choosing the Best Fish Fry Mix
The fish fry mix you choose plays a significant role in the flavor profile and crispiness of your catfish nuggets. It’s important to select a mix that not only provides a good coating but also contains sufficient spices and seasonings. Many pre-packaged mixes are already perfectly seasoned, offering a convenient way to achieve a flavorful crust.
If your chosen fish fry mix seems a bit bland or lacks the robust flavor you desire, don’t hesitate to enhance it! You can easily mix in additional seasonings. A pinch of salt, freshly ground black pepper, and a generous dash of Old Bay Seasoning will elevate the flavor of your fish fry, adding a classic coastal taste. Experiment with garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika for even more depth.
Gluten-Free Options
For those avoiding gluten, it’s crucial to select a certified gluten-free fish fry mix. These mixes often use rice flour, cornmeal, or a blend of gluten-free flours to create a light and crispy coating. A popular and reliable gluten-free option is Riceland Fish Fry, which consistently delivers great results without compromising on taste or texture.
Traditional Options
If gluten is not a concern, you have a wider array of choices. Traditional fish fry mixes often use wheat flour or corn flour as their base. Louisiana Fish Fry is a well-loved brand known for its robust seasoning and excellent crispy finish, offering an authentic Southern-style flavor.
No matter which mix you choose, ensuring it’s well-seasoned will guarantee your air fryer catfish nuggets are bursting with flavor from the first bite.

Notes
We have made this without flipping the catfish as well and it works well too and they did not stick to the basket. Be sure to spray the basket first with grapeseed oil and spray well. They do get crispier on both sides if you flip them though, be very careful when flipping so they do not break apart.
